Azienda Agricola Steiger-Kalena
In 2014, Giulio Steiger decided to move together with his wife Margarita from Paris to Molise, the region in which he was born. Giulio and Margarita longed to create a new family while working closely with nature. They were searching for an unharmed piece of land, as widely found in Molise, in which to plant a new vineyard. They set eyes on a valley near Contrada Olivoli, in the countryside of Casacalenda.
The commune is situated roughly halfway between the capital city of Campobasso and the Adriatic coast. The land was partly cultivated with grain and partly wild; the rockiest side of the hill was covered by a dense mastic forest.
In 2015, the planting of the vines began, as well as the construction of the cellar in the right respect of the surrounding environment, giving origin to the Azienda Agricola Steiger-Kalena – “Kalena” being the old name of Casacalenda.
Today the farm covers about thirty hectares, twelve of which are planted with vines, while the rest still retains its original character with olive trees, pastures, and woods. At the top of the hill stands the ruins of a medieval tower, known as the Torre di Olivoli or “tower of the brigands”, under which the sheep and donkeys live in an old stable.
